Born and raised in Duxbury, Mass., Cushman was the daughter of Lucy Hall and Walter Fosdick Cushman and the granddaughter of Mary Winsor Alden Cushman and sea captain David Cushman, Jr. After earning a diploma from a three-year program in the Department of Household Arts at State Normal School in Framingham (1918), she returned to be one of the first women to receive a bachelor's degree in education (1922).
